Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT)
At Inside Passage Relationship Counseling, we specialize in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, the most effective approach to couples counseling.
What Is Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy?
Developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy is an evidence-based, empirically validated approach to couples therapy. Considered the gold-standard of couples therapy for its high success rate, EFT is based on the neuroscience of adult attachment. Couples learn to address the negative patterns that underlie the majority of their conflict cycles, regardless of the exact content that is the focus of the conflict.
Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy follows a well-researched map of 9 steps and 3 stages of therapy to help couples move from distress and insecure attachment to safe connection and secure attachment.
- 70-75% of couples move from distress to recovery
- Roughly 90% show significant improvement
- 16 outcome studies show changes in the brain's response to threat
“We were really in crisis mode when we found Inside Passage Relationship Counseling and they helped us get back on the same team. I don’t know that our marriage would have survived without their expert guidance.”

What to Expect in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy at Inside Passage Relationship Counseling
Inside Passage couples therapists are trained in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy to support your journey toward a happier, healthier relationship.
Assessment & Understanding
EFT begins by creating a safe environment to assess relationship dynamics and the emotions underlying conflicts. Your therapist will help you identify your primary emotions and attachment needs.
Identifying
Patterns
EFT explores negative interaction patterns and cycles that contribute to relationship distress. Patterns often involve a dance of emotions and responses between partners. Together you will learn a new, positive dance.
Accessing
Emotions
Therapists guide couples in recognizing and expressing their authentic emotions while also fostering the ability for deep listening and understanding. Emphasis is placed on identifying unmet needs and longings.
Reconstructing Interactions
EFT works to reshape negative patterns by fostering new, positive interactions. Inside Passage therapists help couples create secure bonds by learning to turn towards each other for comfort and connection.
Consolidation & Integration
The therapy process involves consolidating positive changes and integrating new ways of relating. Couples learn to maintain emotional and physical connection, and navigate challenges effectively.
Emotional
Engagement
EFT focuses on enhancing emotional engagement, creating a secure attachment, and strengthening the bond between partners, giving you the tools you need to nurture a long lasting, loving relationship.
