How is Inside Passage different?

Do you find yourselves getting stuck in the same negative patterns, regardless of the topic or issue?

When conflict erupts with your partner, can you predict who will say and do what? Do you know how the other will react?

I’m here to tell you that all of us, even those with good communication skills and high emotional intelligence, even Therapists like me, get pulled into negative patterns with the people we love the most.

That’s because to love is to be vulnerable. And when we are vulnerable we naturally protect ourselves in reactive ways.

In couples therapy, not only will I help you see how the two of you are getting stuck in negative emotional cycles, but I’ll also guide you to relate to each other in ways that will bring you closer, even when the moment is highly charged.

That might sound impossible, but it’s not.

Over the past 15 years, as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, I’ve worked with hundreds of couples and individuals who’ve come to me stressed, disconnected, and often, in hopeless state.

I helped them to break personal patterns, heal from past traumas, reconnect with themselves and their partner and begin to navigate life in a healthier, happier way.

And I can do that for you too.

I believe successful therapy happens when:

Education and Training

About Heather Varnau, LMHC:

My journey as a Therapist began as a meditation student 20 years ago.

Because I saw the immense benefits of mindfulness meditation on my own mental, emotional, physical, and relational health, I pursued a graduate degree in Psychology that focused on the intersection of Buddhist/Eastern and Western Psychology.

Since graduating in 2006, I’ve dedicated myself to ongoing post-graduate training and clinical practice in evidence-based practices of relationship therapy, including Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), Gottman Method Couples Therapy, and Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS).

I am happily married to my husband—we’ve been together for 20 years—and know first-hand that joyful and lasting intimate connection is possible.

I also know that periods of challenge in my relationship were greatly helped by meeting with a talented Couple’s Therapist.

I have 2 awesome kids: a middle-schooler and an elementary-schooler, both in Bellingham schools.

My passions outside of work include all kinds of outdoor adventure, trail running, world travel, time with family and friends, and reliving the 90’s through music and movies.
