What is Pre-Marital or Pre-Commitment Counseling?

Are you ready to commit? Pre-marital Counseling can help assure that you have the foundation you need for a healthy, lasting marriage.

Similar to couples therapy, pre-marital counseling assists partners in developing vital communication skills, identifying potential sources of conflict, and learning how to address their unique relationship challenges.

Following a strengths-based approach for pre-marital work, at Inside Passage Relationship Counseling, we believe that you already have knowledge, resources, and experiences that will guide our work. Using gold-standard, evidence-based therapy models such as Prepare & Enrich, Gottman Method and Emotionally-Focused Couples Therapy,  we will work together  to create a customized plan for your unique relationship.

“We’ve been married for 4 years now and I attribute much of our success to the guidance we received before we got married. It brought us closer and today we have the skills to navigate the big waves when they come.”

How Does Premarital Counseling work?
Premarital counseling is a structured process that typically involves several steps and techniques designed to help couples prepare for marriage. Here’s an overview of how it works:

Co-creating a Plan

We’ll start with an initial session to make sure working together is a good fit. We will share policies and procedures, co-create goals, and learn about your relationship. We will make a plan for scheduling 6 additional sessions, with the option of continuing after that, working together to determine the right frequency for our sessions, whether weekly, or every other week, based on availability and financial needs.

Assessment

You will receive a link to take the Prepare & Enrich Assessment. This assessment takes about 45 minutes to complete and is charged separately ($35). After you’ve taken the assessment you will receive a custom report providing insights for you to read, reference and learn about areas of strength and growth in your relationship.

Post Assessment Sessions

Your licensed, professional therapists will use interactive exercises to help you learn and understand your family histories, develop and practice effective communication and conflict resolution skills, process past arguments and heal areas of hurt, install rituals for sexual connection and lasting intimacy and how you will handle things in the future.

Feedback and Adjustments

Throughout the process, couples provide feedback on what is working and what isn’t. This feedback helps the counselor adjust the approach as needed to better address the couple’s unique needs.

Final Review

As the sessions conclude, your counselor will help you review what you've learned and develop a plan for maintaining a healthy relationship. This might include setting future goals, creating a conflict resolution plan, or identifying ongoing support resources.

Follow Up

Some couples opt for follow-up sessions after marriage to check in on their progress and address any new challenges that arise.
